Exploring the Great Salt Lake has been one of my greatest passions, and I’ve made it my mission to visit as many places around the lake as possible. However, much of the lake’s shores are difficult to access due to the lack of road infrastructure and the considerable distance from existing roads to the shoreline.
There have been numerous occasions when I picked a spot to visit, only to find myself hiking for hours to get there, often missing the optimal time to shoot due to the long distances. This challenge led me to think about alternative ways to reach these remote areas more efficiently.
That’s when I discovered Bakcou Bikes in Ogden. They specialize in “Hunting Bikes,” which are fat-tired e-bikes designed for long-range and overland capability. Intrigued by their potential, I approached Bakcou and shared my project of documenting the Great Salt Lake for my upcoming book. I explained the difficult-to-reach places I had been trying to photograph and described the challenging terrain.
To my delight, Bakcou listened to my story and saw the value in what I was doing. They decided to support my efforts and provided me with a Bakcou Scout, a full-suspension e-bike that is going to be to be a game-changer in my photography adventures.
The Scout is built for challenging terrains, featuring a robust Bafang Ultra mid-drive motor that provides immense power and torque, making it capable of handling rugged paths with ease. Its fat tires offer increased traction, essential for traversing the varied and often unstable surfaces around the lake. Additionally, the Scout’s full suspension, including the RST Renegade Air Fork and Rockshox Monarch Air Rear, ensures a smooth ride even over rocky and uneven ground. The integrated Panasonic Lithium-ion battery offers substantial range, allowing me to venture far without worrying about running out of power.
I recently took it out for the first time. I ventured to Antelope Island and rode it to Split Rock to see what it was capable of. I rode from White Rock Bay over into Split Rock Bay and back with all of my camera gear on my back. The terrain was so varied—trails, deep sand, big rocks, grassy fields, etc.—the Scout easily conquered all of it. I was able to get to my shooting spot in just over 30 minutes to make some amazing photographs.
With this new bike, I’m going to be able to access previously unreachable areas of the Great Salt Lake, capturing stunning images and documenting the lake's beauty more comprehensively. This partnership will not only enhanced my ability to explore but has also enabled me to share the wonders of the Great Salt Lake with a broader audience. Thanks to Bakcou for providing me with such an amazing tool to help me in my work!
